Kolkata, Dec 17 (IANS) Bangladeshi Mukti Jodhas, Indian war veterans and serving officers of the armed forces came together on Wednesday to commemorate the victory of Indian forces and Mukti Bahini over Pakistani forces during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.
The Vijay Diwas celebrations at the Eastern Command assume special significance as Mukti Jodhas and Indian war veterans who fought shoulder to shoulder reunite every year to celebrate this momentous occasion in history, an official release said.
The serving officer were led by Eastern Command chief Lt. Gen. Praveen Bakshi.
A large number of serving and retired personnel of the three services paid homage by laying wreaths at the Vijay Smarak war memorial at the Eastern Command.
Bangladesh Food Minister Md. Qamrul Islam also placed a wreath along with other serving and retired Officers of the 30-member Bangladeshi delegation who were present on the occasion.
The day was also celebrated at the Trishakti Corps War Memorial in northern West Bengal.
Trishakti Corps commander Lt. Gen. Surinder Singh laid a wreath at the war memorial.
The commander highlighted the role of the Indian armed forces in achieving a major military victory in the 1971 war.
The function was also attended by ex-servicemen and other important dignitaries from police and civil administration.
