Ballots win over bullets in Kolhan, rural voters take lead

Jamshedpur: Despite threat of Naxal attacks looming large over Ghatshila sub division illiterate tribal people proved that ballot (now EVM) is powerful than bullet on Tuesday during the second phase of election that took place here today.

Voter turn out was impressive in all the constituencies of Kolhan division Bahragora, Ghatsila, Potka, Seraikela and Kharsawan. Despite ‘poster war wagged by the ultras in Ghatshila the voters dared to come out and exercise their franchise.

Deputy Commssioner Amitabh Kushal said that the second phase was polling was held peacefully under strict vigil. He said that both Election Commission and the district police made good co-ordination to ensure the elections are conducted in smooth manner.

He said that the process to calculate the voting percentage is on. However according initial calculation Bahragora registered 73 per cent polling, Ghatshila 67 per cent, Potka 66 per cent. While Jamshedpur East and West were 58 per cent and 60 per cent till 5 pm.

Prior to this the tribal and police were seen moving freely in this area, despite Maoists gave a poll boycott call, but tribals took it casually.

The day began with low turned out. Almost all the polling booths were vacant however as the day moved ahead the polling speed kicked-off.

It may be mentioned that Security forces comprising of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Jharkhand Jaguar assault groups, Jharkhand armed police, district police and home guards were deployed to ensure peaceful polling under threat of Naxalite effort to disrupt the polling.

Meanwhile at Adityapur Small Industries Association (ASIA), a leading industries body in Adityapur, up three “model booth” close to the booth Nos 134, 135 and 136 at RIT area in Adityapur with free tea-stall rest rooms and even toilets.

ASIA president SN Thakur said that the initiative was taken to boost the voting percentage. He said they wanted maximum number of voters may turn up for the voting in the polling. Thakur, when asked, said he like others in the ASIA are in favour of a government of full majority in Jharkhand.

Except Ichagarh assembly constituency in Seraikela-Kharsawan district, the polling in rest of the 13 assembly constituencies took place in second phase of the polling. Polling at Ichagarh, which is also a rebel-infected area, will be held in the third phase on December 9.

According to police sources, over 20,000 of jawans belonging to border secruity forces. The kind of security forces are pressed into security service include Border Security Forces, CRPF, ITBP (Indo Tibetan Border Police) SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal) JAP, Cobra. Anti-landmine vehicles were deployed at the strategic locations.
