MLA Kunal Sarangi demands withdrawal of merger decision

Baharagora: Hundreds of villagers of Baharagora took out a protest rally against the proposed merger of several local government schools on Saturday.

After the rally which started at Netaji Subhash Shishu Udyan, the protestors staged a demonstration before the local block office to demand revocation of the merger plan. A memorandum addressed to the President of Indian and the Governor of Jharkhand was handed over to the Block Development Officer (BDO).

Leading the agitators, Baharagora MLA Kunal Sarnagi said the protests will continue till the state government withdraws its decision to merge various government schools. He said the government was at fault as far as the merger plan was concerned. He said the merger of many good schools with other schools would deprive students of education as they would have to go a long distance to attend classes.

The protestors included students, parents, political leaders and social activists. Lending support to the agitation, members of the Primary Teachers Association held a meeting on the block office premises. It was presided over by the state secretary of the outfit Ashish Mishra.

Also present on the occasion, Dr Dinesh Sarangi, former state health minister and father of Kunal Sarangi, said many regional language schools teaching Bengali, Odiya and Urdu would be finished as a result of the merger plan of the state government.
