Ranchi: As the new session of the Jharkhand Assembly begins with the formation of the new government, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faces a crucial decision regarding its Leader of Opposition (LoP). With 21 MLAs in its ranks, the BJP is set to choose a leader who can effectively challenge the Hemant Soren-led government. Among the top contenders for the position are Babulal Marandi, Champai Soren, and Neera Yadav.

Babulal Marandi, the BJP’s State President, is a strong contender for the position of Leader of Opposition. Marandi, who was previously the Leader of the BJP Legislative Party, had contested elections on the JVM ticket in the past but now returns as an MLA elected on the BJP’s symbol. Given his stature and experience, the BJP is likely to position Marandi as a prominent tribal leader to counter the influence of Hemant Soren in the Assembly. This move would align with the BJP’s strategy to project a tribal face to challenge the ruling government.

Champai Soren, a former Chief Minister and a new entrant to the BJP, is another key contender. He joined the BJP just before the elections after leaving the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Soren, who won from a tribal reserved seat, is vocal about his grievances with the JMM and has indicated that he will launch a movement focused on the issue of Bangladeshi infiltration. As a prominent tribal leader, he too could be positioned as a strong opposition figure against Hemant Soren’s government. (w/nkm)

In addition to Marandi and Soren, another potential candidate for the Leader of Opposition role is CP Singh, an experienced and long-standing MLA. Singh’s experience and seniority in the party make him a likely choice, especially if the party decides to select someone from the general category. His longstanding presence in the Assembly could bring much-needed stability and experience to the opposition’s ranks.

However, BJP’s leadership will also need to rely on new faces to take the party’s cause forward in the Assembly. With many prominent figures losing the election, including former Leader of Opposition Amar Kumar Bauri, BJP’s whip Biranchi Narayan, and several others, the party will depend on fresh voices like Satyendra Tiwari, Prakash Ram, and Manju Devi, who won from Jamua and is known for her strong educational background.

Another potential dark horse for the role of Leader of Opposition is Neera Yadav, who has been elected MLA from Koderma for the third time. If the BJP opts for a leader from the OBC and women’s categories, Yadav may also be given the opportunity to take charge of the opposition.
