Seraikela, May 16: A distressing incident unfolded on Tuesday morning as an overcrowded passenger auto overturned near Dugni on the Seraikela-Kandra main road under the jurisdiction of Seraikela police station. As a result, 16 individuals including 15 women laborers, sustained injuries with the auto driver among those harmed. The mishap occurred at approximately a quarter to nine, prompting cries for help from the injured at the scene.

Shankar Satpathy, an employee of Gamharia, who was en route to his duty, promptly notified the local populace and arranged for a road ambulance to transport the injured to Sadar Hospital. Upon receiving news of the incident, the Seraikela police arrived at the location and secured the overturned auto. The driver had been ferrying the women laborers from Dugni village to Saldih for construction work.

As the auto approached the Seraikela-Kandra main road, the driver attempted to make way for an approaching Scorpio traveling at high speed. However, due to the auto’s excessive velocity, it uncontrollably overturned. The loud screams of the trapped female laborers alerted nearby individuals, who rushed to their aid, extricating them from the overturned auto one by one. Eventually, they managed to right the vehicle.

The auto driver, alongside the women workers, also sustained injuries. Among the 15 injured women laborers are Subhadra Nayak, Kalpana Gop, Kalavati Gop, Sugun Kaivart, Shankari Kaivart, Taramani, Hopna Gop, Fulmani Gop, Mangali Devi, Jitni Nayak, Uttara Nayak, Disha Nayak, Rani Gop, Sulochana Kaivart, and Tumpa Das. Unfortunately, Sugun Kaivart and Shankari Kaivart sustained serious injuries.

It has been discovered that the auto was significantly overcrowded. The auto driver, disregarding safety measures, crammed 15 women laborers into a space designed for only seven to eight people, leaving no room for himself. In this cramped setting, the auto driver attempted to navigate the vehicle, leading to the loss of control when the Scorpio suddenly appeared, resulting in the overturning of the auto. Nitish Kumar, in-charge of the Seraikela police station, stated that the women laborers were injured due to the auto overturning uncontrollably. The injured individuals have received medical treatment at Sadar Hospital.
