Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy on Thursday described former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a towering figure in Indian politics whose personality reflected a rare blend of ideals, simplicity, sensitivity, and firm leadership.
Recalling Vajpayee’s political journey from the Jana Sangh to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Roy shared several inspiring anecdotes from his life. Speaking at a programme organised on the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the Janata Dal (United) Jamshedpur city office in Baridih, Roy said that during Vajpayee’s early organisational tours, very few people owned vehicles.
Despite this, Vajpayee never waited for grand receptions and often reached party offices by rickshaw. On many occasions, he chose to stay at the homes of party workers, reflecting his humility and deep connection with grassroots workers.
Roy also spoke about Vajpayee’s brief 13-day tenure as Prime Minister in 1996 and highlighted how his unwavering commitment to ideology and organisation led to the formation of the BJP after breaking away from the Janata Party.
He said these events stood as testimony to Vajpayee’s principled politics and strong character. He further noted that the statue of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan installed in the Parliament complex was set up during Vajpayee’s tenure as Prime Minister.
The demand for the statue had been raised through the JP Manch and was accepted by Vajpayee, reflecting his respect for democratic movements and leaders. The programme was presided over by JD(U) Jamshedpur unit president Ajay Kumar.
East Singhbhum District President Subodh Shrivastava and a large number of party workers were present. All the attendees paid floral tributes to Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s portrait. The event was conducted by District General Secretary Kulvinder Singh Pannu.
