Ranchi, February 3: Anurag Gupta, a 1990 batch IPS officer of the Jharkhand cadre, has been appointed as the regular Director General of Police (DGP) of the state. The notification regarding his appointment was issued by the Jharkhand government on Monday.
Gupta had previously served as the in-charge DGP, in addition to his role as the Director General of Crime and Research Department. Prior to his current appointment, he handled the responsibility of DG Training after being promoted to the rank of DG in 2022. He was appointed as the in-charge DGP on July 26, 2024.
The appointment comes after a period of uncertainty surrounding the DGP position in the state. During the last elections, Gupta was removed from the position as per the Election Commission’s directives, and Ajay Kumar Singh, a 1989 batch IPS officer, was re-appointed as the DGP on October 19, 2024. However, following the swearing-in of Hemant Soren as Chief Minister, Gupta was reinstated as the in-charge DGP, with Singh taking up the role of Managing Director of the Jharkhand Police Housing Corporation Limited.
Gupta is regarded as an astute police officer with extensive experience, particularly in cybercrime investigations. His tenure as ADG of the Special Branch and DG of Crime and Economic Offenses (CED) has been marked by his involvement in solving complex cases. As regular DGP, Gupta has identified tackling cybercrime, narcotics, organized crime, and crimes against women as his key priorities.
