Jamshedpur tops the rainfall chart with around 90 mm
Jamshedpur, Dec. 18 : The East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Amit Kumar has ordered for suspension of classes (till class V) of both private and government schools from Wednesday (December 19) till December 31. The action was taken acting on the directive of the principal secretary school education and literacy department, Amrendra Pratap Singh. The order also directs for conduct of classes (between class VI and XII) from 10 am till 2 pm.
We have issued directives keeping in view the plummeting temperature accompanied by rain and forecast of chilly weather conditions in the next few days across the state. As per the directive by the principal secretary, after December 31 the schools can start classes for primary section between 9 am and 2 pm. Further directive will be issued by the government depending on the weather situation, said East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Amit Kumar.
We will follow the orders but we are worried on how to make up for the class sessions lost. This apart, the directive to operate school at 10 am will also disturb our examination schedules for various classes and also pre-board examination. We would be writing to the deputy commissioner on the issue soon, said B. Chandrasekhar, secretary of the Jamshedpur Unaided Private School Association.
Meanwhile, cyclone Phethai resulted in a downpour at Jamshedpur. Jamshedpur topped the rainfall chart with around 90 mm of rain recorded during the past 24 hours ( 8.30 am of Monday to 8.30 am of Tuesday).
Chakradharpur and Chaibasa , both in West Singhbhum recorded heavy rain of around 75 mm. Statistics suggested that this was the heaviest rainfall record in December, a peak winter month in places like Jamshedpur and Ranchi in the past eight years.
The chill has intensified because of the strong flow of the dry north-westerly. The cold wave prevailing in large parts of northern India is also adding to the crispness of weather in Jharkhand. The condition will stay for another 48 hours , said the duty officer at Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore, Kolkata.
