54 Per Cent of Cyber Fraud Victims in Jamshedpur Are Senior Citizens

Jamshedpur: A worrying trend has emerged in the Steel City as cybercriminals increasingly shift their focus toward the elderly and retired employees. According to recent data from the Jamshedpur Cyber Cell, senior citizens now constitute a staggering 54% of all cyber fraud victims in the city.

In the past year alone, approximately 600 cases of cybercrime were reported locally, out of which nearly 324 involved senior citizens. On average, the city is recording five new cases of digital fraud every single day.

Modus Operandi: Fear and Deception

Cyber experts and police officials note that scammers are employing sophisticated psychological tactics to drain bank accounts. The most common methods include:

  • Digital Arrest: Fraudsters pose as CBI, Police, or Customs officials, claiming the victim’s identity has been used in illegal activities and “arresting” them over a video call to extort money.
  • KYC & Bank Alerts: Scammers create a sense of urgency by claiming a bank account or SIM card will be blocked unless a link is clicked or an OTP shared.
  • Investment Scams: Luring retirees with the promise of high returns on pension funds through fake stock trading apps.

Why Seniors?

Cyber DSP Manoj Thakur highlighted that senior citizens are often targeted due to their perceived lack of digital literacy and their tendency to trust official-sounding callers. “Awareness is our strongest weapon against these crimes. We urge retired employees to be extremely cautious of unsolicited calls and suspicious links,” Thakur stated.

The Numbers at a Glance (Annual Data):

  • Total Cyber Cases: 600
  • Senior Citizen Victims: 324 (54%)
  • Digital Arrest/Fake Officer Scams: 65 cases
  • KYC/OTP Fraud: 67 cases
  • Investment/Trading Fraud: 49 cases

Police Launch Awareness Drive

In response to the surge, Jamshedpur Police has announced a dedicated strategy to protect its older residents. Cyber awareness camps will be organized across various police stations. These sessions will feature bank officials and cyber experts who will provide hands-on training to seniors on how to secure their mobile devices and recognize “red flags.”

Safety Advisory for Citizens:

  1. Do Not Trust Unknown Video Calls: No government agency (CBI, Police, RBI) will ever “arrest” you over a video call or ask for money to settle a case.
  2. Protect Your OTP: Never share your One-Time Password (OTP) or banking credentials with anyone.
  3. Avoid Suspicious Links: Do not click on links received via SMS or WhatsApp, even if they look like official wedding cards or electricity bill alerts.
  4. Immediate Reporting: If you have been defrauded, call the National Cyber Helpline at 1930 immediately or report it at the nearest police station.

The authorities emphasize that the first “golden hour” after a fraud occurs is critical for freezing the stolen funds before they are moved out of the banking system.
