New Delhi (IANS): India’s semiconductor revolution is accelerating. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced today that the country expects to operationalize five semiconductor plants by the end of 2026.
The central government has so far approved 12 semiconductor projects. Out of these, three facilities have already commenced commercial production, and the government plans to inaugurate two more in the coming months.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi previously launched the nation’s first and second semiconductor plants on February 28 and March 31, 2026, respectively.
Global Confidence in India Soars
The minister highlighted that the third CG SEMI (OSAT) facility in Sanand has now entered commercial production. This milestone has significantly strengthened global confidence in India’s semiconductor capabilities and reliability.
“Under the Prime Minister’s visionary leadership, we are shaping a robust semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem that will serve as the foundation for a developed India,” Vaishnaw noted.
Vaishnaw credited the Gujarat government’s active cooperation and effective execution for this rapid progress. Thanks to their support, the CG SEMI plant transitioned from its groundbreaking ceremony to full commercial production in just 27 months.
Driving Social Change and Global Exports
The minister described the Sanand plant as both a technical triumph and a powerful symbol of social change.
- Empowering Women: The facility currently employs young women from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, and Gujarat as operators. These women previously travelled to Malaysia for specialized training.
- Localized Training: Vaishnaw emphasized that as India’s semiconductor ecosystem matures, the country will increasingly offer this world-class training domestically.
- Global Supply Chain: The facility manufactures chips that will power domestic automobiles, scooters, and industrial equipment. India will also export these chips to Japan, the United States, and Europe, positioning the nation as a vital player in the global semiconductor supply chain.
Massive Investments and Job Growth
Partnerships and massive financial backing continue to drive India’s tech boom:
- Strategic Partnerships: The CG SEMI facility held its groundbreaking on March 13, 2024, backed by an investment of over ₹7,600 crore. A partnership with Japan’s Renesas Electronics grants India direct access to cutting-edge global semiconductor technologies, manufacturing practices, and quality systems.
- Economic Impact: India’s broader electronics manufacturing sector has skyrocketed into a ₹13 lakh crore industry, which now supports more than 25 lakh jobs nationwide.
