100 wildlife enthusiasts including teachers, scientists participate

Jamshedpur, June 26: A bird watching programme was organised by the Corporate Sustainability department, Tata Steel in association with Tata Steel Zoological Park, Jamshedpur today at the foothills of Dalma.

This event aligned with Sustainability Month celebrations in Tata Steel aims to build a common understanding of the term ‘sustainability’ amongst all employees and stakeholders of Tata Group Companies.  It also helps to make changes in habits required for our sustainable future. The theme of this year is ‘BeEarthSmart–Learn, Live, Lead’.

Dimna, 13km from Jamshedpur is close to the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. The area is marked by an artificial lake and is located at the foothills of the Dalma mountain range famous for its serenity and pleasant greenery. Forests is characterised with shed leaves in the summer and attains its full bloom at the onset of monsoon. The forest falls under “Dry Peninsular Sal” and “Northern Dry Mixed Deciduous Forest” category.

The programme started at 5:30AM and concluded at 9AM. About 100 wildlife enthusiasts participated. Briefing was held in two sessions. First session was where the participants observed the birds by randomly tracking on the foothill of 2km.  Second session was at Tata Steel Management Development Centre (TMDC) to share the experience and findings. Different teams were named as Hornbill, Oriole, Tree Pie, Kingfisher, Pitta, Stork and Woodpecker. All participants were assigned task to identify and record birds in their datasheet cum reference sheet.

A consolidated 48 bird species were identified during the sessions by all participants. The participants comprised Tata Steel Employees, Teachers, Scientists, Volunteers etc. Forest guards from Jamshedpur Forest Division also attended. The event was led by Somesh Biswas, Chief Corporate Sustainability and Dr Hishmi Jamil Husain, Head Biodiversity Corporate Sustainability, Tata Steel.
