45-year-old man killed in road mishap at Sundernagar

Jamshedpur : In a sever road mishap a 45-year-old man was killed on the spot as he was hit by a pick-up van at Sundernagar on Tata-Hata state highway. The victim was identified as Keshav Mahto, a resident of Sitaramdera. The mishap victim used to run an NGO at Potka and his wife is a constable in district police.

Officer-in-charge, Sundernagar police station, KN Ojha said that the mishap took place as the driver of the pick-up van was at a high speed. “As per our information the pick-up van was a at high speed, the driver failed to control the vehicle and deviated from its route and hit the biker,” said the officer-in-charge.

As soon as the mishap took place, the driver of the van fled the scene. Meanwhile after the accident the local people set up a blockade demanding the administration to set up speed-breaker at the strategic points in the accident-prone stretch. The blockade was set up at 7.30 am and was removed by 8 am after police assured that they would recommend for setting up speed-breakers at the dangerous stretch.

Traffic movement was also disrupted for hours as the agitators refused to move till their demand for adequate compensation was met.

A police official said: “We will see to it that rash-driving is checked with immediate effect, and for this we will look into exactly how many cases related to the road accidents have been registered and if the drivers who are accused of causing the mishap are being convicted.

The senior police officer also pointed out that he was going to curtail the rash-driving by the two-wheelers, especially the youngsters.

He said he would stress whether the investigation into the cases related to the road mishaps were being pursued properly or not.
