28-year-old woman succumbs to burn injuries, FIR filed against husband

Jamshedpur : A 28-year-old woman Surbhi Jaiswal succumbed to burn injuries at Tata Main Hospital’s burn care unit on Friday. After registering a case of dowry death with the Chakradharpur police station in West Singhbhum district after an FIR lodged by Surbhi’s father Santosh Jaiswal, the police have decided to arrest the deceased’s husband and mother-in-law.

The police have decided to arrest the husband Ashish Jaiswal and mother Ganga Jaiswal despite the deceased had claimed in her dying statement that she sustained burns while carrying household work.

Ashish who is a businessman at Chakradharpur is also admitted at the Tata Main Hospital’s burn care unit with the burns he had sustained while trying to save his wife on August 30 evening.

A resident of Koderma, Santosh Jaiswal has mentioned in the FIR lodged on September 1 that Surbhi was being tormented by her husband and mother-in-law this compelled her to commit suicide by setting herself on fire.

“We have every proof that Ashish used to return home late in the night on a regular basis and when Surbhi would object to his this habit, both the husband and his mother would torture my daughter. Unable to bear the torture anymore, my daughter set herself on fire,” said Jaiswal. Surabhi was married to Ashish in 2013 and they have a two-and-half-year-old daughter.

The police have seized the body and sent it to the MGM Medical College mortuary for post-mortem.

Meanwhile, OC, Chakradharpur police station, Anjani Kumar confirmed about the case of dowry death against Ashish and his other Ganga Jaiswal.

�We are investigating the incident. Though the deceased gave a dying statement mentioning she was accidentally burnt, but we will arrest the accused on the basis of the FIR lodged by the deceased’s father,” said the officer-in-charge.
