The arrested assailant, Mohammed Suleiman is a resident of Jugsalai Jama Masjid area. He was produced at the court, while his associate Ameer Khan (23), who is equally responsible for the old man’s murder, is still absconding.
Both Suleiman and Ameer are drug-addicts and the duo had committed the heinous crime for money.
Senior superintendent of police, Anoop T Mathew said that the murder victim Mustaque Ahmed owned an old tyre shop near the Jugsalai level-crossing and would also stay at the tyre godown at night.
“As per the reports, on December 5, both Suleiman and Ameer had entered into his shop for stealing old tyres and also iron materials, but somehow Mustaque had woken up.

Later, Suleiman confessed that they had also taken away an ATM card from the victim’s trouser pocket, but the card was of no use for them.
During the day on December 5, a section of the Jugsalai residents had protested the murder of Mustaque Ahmed and had demonstrated in front of the Jugsalai police station, leading the senior SP to set up a task force for detection of the crime.
According to senior SP, the team led by deputy superintendent of police (law and order) B N Singh has probed the case secretly and established that Suleman and Ameer, who are drug addicts, were behind the murder.
On Saturday night, the team nabbed one of the criminals from the Tatanagar railway station area.
