21-year-old ITI student commits suicide, family blames ragging

Jamshedpur : Ragged by senior of his college, a 21-year-old youth Abhishek Kumar committed suicide by hanging at his house at Jhagru Bagan area in Telco on Wednesday.

The deceased was a trainee at the Bundu-based Industrial Training Institute and ragging by the seniors at the hostel in Bundu near Ranchi led him take harsh step.

In this connection, the police have registered a case of suicide on the statement of deceased’s father Shyam Babu Bhagat after sending the body to the MGM Medical College mortuary for post-mortem.

Shyam Babu said that his son had joined the ITI, Bundu last year and had been undergoing training by staying at the institute’s hostel there.

“We came to know that he was subjected to ragging at the hostel by the senior trainees . He had even lodged a complaint with the Bundu police station after the incident.

Though the matter was settled, he was not feeling well and was not not willing to continue his training there,” said Bhagat, who works with a private firm in Jamshedpur.

Bhagat said his son had come home 15 days ago and was about to leave for Bundu in a day or two, but he was not willing to go there.

Officer-in-charge, Telco thana, Jayant Tirkey confirmed it to be a case of suicide as the deceased had bolted the room from inside.

“As per the statement of the deceased’s parents it appeared that Abhishek was suffering from depression while carrying out his training at the Bundu-based ITI. He had also been allegedly subjected to ragging by the fellow trainees at his hostel. We have recovered the body and sent it to the medical college mortuary for post-mortem,” said the officer-in-charge.

Tirkey said as the deceased has not left a suicide note they cannot say the exact reason behind his taking this harsh step.
