Jamshedpur: What could have turned into a deadly ambush was thwarted just in time by alert security forces deep within the dense forests straddling Chaibasa and Seraikela-Kharsawan. Acting swiftly on intelligence inputs, a large-scale anti-Naxal operation unearthed a hidden cache of explosives, averting a potential tragedy.
On Saturday, the search campaign was launched across the forested terrains of the bordering areas of Chaibasa and Seraikela-Kharsawan districts. The following day, during the course of intensive search operations, security personnel recovered approximately 14 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) that had been clandestinely planted by Maoist cadres. These were detected and defused with the help of trained bomb disposal teams and local civilian resistance groups.
The explosives, each weighing around 2 to 2.5 kilograms, were found planted in the Toklo (Chaibasa) and Kuchai (Seraikela-Kharsawan) police station areas, which are known Maoist strongholds. The recovered arsenal included desi hand grenades, ammonium nitrate-based powder, wire-connected triggers, and pressure cooker bombs—clear indicators of a well-planned ambush strategy aimed at targeting patrolling forces.
The high-risk operation was carried out jointly by personnel from the West Singhbhum Police, Seraikela-Kharsawan Police, Jharkhand Jaguar, CRPF, and the elite CoBRA 60th Battalion. The operation was initiated after West Singhbhum police received credible intelligence inputs on July 18, suggesting the presence of armed CPI (Maoist) squads in the region. According to sources, the Maoist groups had laid the explosives with the intention of inflicting heavy damage on advancing security teams and intimidating the local population.
Security forces immediately mobilized a coordinated counter-insurgency push, launching combing operations deep within the forested regions of both districts. The campaign, which is still ongoing, aims to sanitize the area, destroy Maoist infrastructure, and secure the region for civilians.
Senior police officials have stated that the timely recovery of the explosives has prevented a potential tragedy and dealt a blow to the Maoist strategy of fear and disruption. The presence of local civilian resistance groups, who aided in detecting the suspicious activity, has been hailed as a positive sign of growing community support against extremism.
Further search operations and area domination exercises are underway as part of a broader strategy to restore peace in the affected districts. The administration has reiterated its commitment to eradicating Naxalism and ensuring the safety and development of the region.
This operation marks a significant success in Jharkhand’s ongoing battle against left-wing extremism and showcases the effectiveness of joint security operations in high-threat zones.
