Jamshedpur: The valor and courage of the 106 Battalion Rapid Action Force (RAF) were commemorated on ‘Shaurya Diwas’ at Sundarnagar on Tuesday, April 9. The Chief Guest of the event was Dr. Nishit Kumar, Commandant of the 106 Battalion RAF, accompanied by Shailendra Kumar, 2nd Commanding Officer (PMG), and Shaurya Chakra recipient, Nagendra Singh, Deputy Inspector Rupak Karmakar PMG, and Constable Sujit Oraon PMG, along with all officers and soldiers of the battalion.

The valorous actions of the 2nd battalion deployed at Sardar Post in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, on 9th April 1965 were recalled during the proceedings. Despite facing a brigade-level attack by 3,500 soldiers of the Pakistani Army, a small contingent of CRPF valiantly repelled the assault, resulting in the death of 34 Pakistani soldiers and the capture of four others, while six soldiers of the CRPF made the supreme sacrifice. This remarkable victory marked the first instance in history where a small unit defeated an entire enemy brigade. Hence, April 9 is commemorated annually as Bravery Day or Shaurya Diwas in remembrance of this heroic feat.

Various programs were organized at the 106 Battalion RAF Camp to celebrate the occasion. The Commandant commenced the proceedings by taking salute at the quarter guard, followed by a special darbar where the stories of CRPF bravery were depicted through films, emphasizing the significance of the day.

The day’s events also included an inter-company volleyball match amongst the 106 companies, a painting competition for children from different schools, and a blood donation camp, where personnel from the corps generously donated blood.

Concluding the festivities, in adherence to CRPF tradition, a grand dinner was organized for all officers and soldiers, fostering camaraderie and unity within the battalion.
