The deceased were identified as Birender Sharma (Kitadih, Jamshedpur) and Abhimanyu Gorai (West Midnapore, Bengal) The incident occurred at Bodhanwala ghat under the jurisdiction of Bistupur police station, casting a shadow over the festive fervour in the Steel City.
The victims were part of the Kitadih Puja Committee in the Bagbera area and were actively involved in the Durga idol immersion procession. The truck mishap occurred as the vehicle was navigating a slope near the ghat.
Tragically, two of the injured individuals succumbed to their injuries at Tata Main Hospital, while the remaining three are currently undergoing medical treatment. The condition of two of the injured is reported to be critical.. The injured include Hugra Mukhi, Gopal Gorai, and Vijay Gorai — all from West Midnapore. district in neighbouring Bengal.
Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri and SSP Kishore Kaushal visited the ghat to take stock of the situation. Both officials also visited TMH and spoke to the injured.
Health Minister Gupta, who visited Tata Main Hospital to assess the situation, instructed East Singhbhum District Civil Surgeon Dr. Jujhar Majhi and the hospital staff to ensure proper and immediate treatment of the injured individuals.
Expressing his condolences, Chief Minister Hemant Soren lamented the loss of two lives during the idol immersion and offered prayers for the departed souls. He also extended his wishes for a swift and complete recovery of the injured.
The district administration has swiftly provided medical assistance to those hurt in the tragic incident.
The district administration issued a statement urging devotees to prioritize their safety. In Jamshedpur numerous community committees organize immersion processions, drawing large crowds.
As part of security measures, divers were stationed at the ghats, and the police had deployed drones to monitor activities and prevent any untoward incidents during the idol immersion.
