₹210 Crore Boost for NH-33, Ranchi–Baharagora Stretch Set for Major Upgrade

Jamshedpur: Commuting on National Highway-33, widely regarded as the lifeline connecting Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, is set to become significantly smoother with the Union Ministry of Road Transport approving a major road strengthening project.

The project involves the over-leveling and repair of a 137-kilometre-long four-lane stretch on the Ranchi–Baharagora route, covering key sections from Rampur through Chowka and Rargaon up to Mahulia. The initiative has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹210 crore and is targeted for completion within six months.

The move comes as a major relief for daily commuters and transporters, as nearly 28,000 to 30,000 vehicles—including passenger cars and heavy trucks—use this crucial corridor every day. Poor road conditions, marked by large potholes and uneven surfaces, have long resulted in severe traffic congestion, with jams stretching up to five to six hours on a regular basis.

These disruptions have not only caused inconvenience to the public but have also impacted commercial transportation, leading to delays and economic losses due to missed delivery schedules.

Officials stated that the Ministry has already released funds and handed over the execution plan to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The tendering process is expected to be completed soon, following which on-ground work will commence.

Under the project, the existing road surface will be strengthened, and depressed or damaged portions will be leveled to ensure a smooth and uniform driving experience. Authorities believe that the improvements will significantly enhance traffic flow and reduce the risk of road accidents along this busy highway stretch.

“The NHAI will now rapidly initiate over-leveling work for the repair of this critical section of NH-33, with the aim of eliminating the traffic bottlenecks currently plaguing the highway,” said Vijay Kumar, Project Director, NHAI, Jamshedpur.

Once completed, the upgraded stretch is expected to bring much-needed relief to commuters and boost regional connectivity and trade across eastern India.
