Zoo Safari at Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary Jamshedpur among four planned in Jharkhand

Mail News Service

Ranchi, Jan 15: Wildlife enthusiasts in Jharkhand are in for a treat as the state government plans to establish four zoo safaris in major wildlife sanctuaries. The proposed locations for these safaris are Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Latehar, Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary Jamshedpur, Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary and Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary. The initiative aims to enhance eco-tourism and provide tourists with a unique opportunity to experience wildlife in their natural habitats.

On the instructions of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, the Tourism Department has prepared an ambitious plan to develop the safaris in collaboration with the Forest Department. Each safari is expected to cost around Rs 200 crore, bringing the total project expenditure to Rs 800 crore. The government plans to allocate the required funds in the financial year 2025-26 budget. The Chief Minister had earlier directed the Tourism Department to devise a comprehensive action plan for the development of eco-tourism, identifying locations across the state with high potential. On January 4, the Tourism Minister visited Rajgir in Bihar to study existing models of jungle and zoo safaris and held discussions with local officials about their operations.

To manage the safaris effectively, the government is planning to revive the Jharkhand Eco-Tourism Authority (JETA). This authority will oversee operations across the state and decide on the placement of animals in the safaris. JETA will function under a governing body chaired by the Chief Secretary, with the Forest Secretary heading its executive body. An Executive Director of CCF rank will also be appointed to manage day-to-day operations.

The safaris will provide tourists with the unique experience of observing wildlife in their natural environment from the safety of vehicles such as cars or buses. To enhance the experience, the safaris will include eco-friendly amenities such as canteens, bamboo huts, cafeterias and rest areas. These facilities are designed to ensure visitor comfort while promoting environmental sustainability and supporting local communities.

Each sanctuary offers distinct attractions for visitors. The Palamu Tiger Reserve is Jharkhand’s only tiger reserve, drawing tourists eager for tiger sightings. Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for its elephant population, while Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary hosts a variety of species, including sambar, chital, nilgai, bears and hyenas. Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary is home to animals such as leopards, sambar, barking deer, wild boars, mongooses and porcupines.

This ambitious project is expected to transform tourism in Jharkhand, providing a significant boost to eco-tourism while promoting conservation efforts. With these zoo safaris, the state aims to offer a world-class experience that brings tourists closer to nature in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.
