Jamshedpur : Zilla Parishad member, Rajkumar Singh has embarked on distributing drinking water in areas of Haludbani Panchayat.
According to information three tankers have been pressed into service for supplying water at Haludbani panchayat under Jamshedpur block.
Over 50,000 people covering Sarjamda, Parsudih, Shankarpur, Pradhantola, Vidyasagar Palli and several other areas under the Panchayat would be benefitted.
” Like every yeat this year too I have decided to take steps to meet the water crisis. Tube-wells and bore-wells have gone dry. Therefore, this year too I have decided to supply water through tankers to overcome sufferings of the people,” said Singh.
Apart from drinking water for daily use he also also decided to lend the water tankers to the needy for different functions.
Drinking water scarcity in the city has been compounded by sinking of ground water level and erratic power situation, as a result of which the PHED department is unable to pump adequate water to all localities.
Moreover, the water reservoirs of the city have not collected rainwater due to scanty rains. To deal with the situation, the district administration is getting ready with its plan, which would be implemented when the water crisis intensifies in the next coming months. A senior district official said that said if the water crisis in the city increases, they would increase the water supply through tankers.
The scarcity of water was there even in the last year but this year the situation may go further grim and we were left with no option but to ferry the water from nearest possible source we could, said the official.
Residents of several areas of Jamshedpur are facing an acute water shortage, and are forced to travel about more than a kilometer to fetch drinking water. The water shortage problem is so severe that if temperature soars further several areas might not receive water at all.
According to the information, the water problem is more severe in the areas located at the tail-end of water supply system and on the city outskirts.
The impact of summer has hit early this year. The ground water level at various places has gone down considerably due to the mushrooming high-rises. Moreover due to the rising temperature the water level of two important rivers Swarnarekha and Kharkai has decreased substantially.
The Mango Notified Area Committee, (MNAC) which acts as a municipal body to oversee the day-to-day municipal requirements of about 1.80 lakh population is concerned over the plight of its residents but says it is helpless.
