Youth shot in Jamshedpur, new patrolling system faces its first crisis

Jamshedpur: Less than a day after the launch of a new beat patrolling initiative in the Adityapur thana area, a gang of armed criminals targeted a youth, resulting in serious injuries and raising concerns about the effectiveness of the newly implemented system.

The victim, Subhash Pramanik, was ambushed and shot multiple times in Saldih Bustee early Tuesday morning. Pramanik sustained more than one bullet injury and was rushed to Tata Main Hospital, where he is currently in critical condition.

The attack occurred around 7:00 a.m. as Pramanik was taking a morning stroll near his residence. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, who were on foot, opened fire before fleeing the scene. The police recovered four empty cartridges from the crime scene, and initial reports suggest that Pramanik was hit by at least three bullets, including one in the shoulder.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the shooting may be linked to ongoing gang rivalries in the Adityapur thana area, known for its high crime rate. Adityapur thana OC, Nitin Kumar Singh, and his team responded promptly to the incident but were unable to apprehend the attackers, who had already vanished.

The police are currently working to identify the suspects by interviewing local residents and examining CCTV footage from the area. This incident highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in a region plagued by gang violence and criminal activities.

The beat patrolling system, introduced on Monday by Seraikela-Kharsawan SP Mukesh Lunayat, was intended to address the escalating crime rates in Adityapur. Lunayat, known for his effective policing during his tenure as City SP in Jamshedpur, implemented the system as a pilot project. The Adityapur thana area has been divided into eight beats, each overseen by a sub-inspector, to ensure increased vigilance and quicker response times to emergencies.

The introduction of the beat patrolling system was aimed at curbing incidents of theft, burglary, and drug peddling, which have been rampant in Adityapur. Despite these measures, the recent attack underscores the ongoing challenges in combating crime and ensuring public safety in the area.

SP Mukesh Lunayat’s initiative is intended to bring a more systematic approach to policing, with officers assigned specific areas to monitor and respond promptly to any distress calls. However, the violent incident involving Pramanik raises urgent questions about the system’s immediate effectiveness and the broader issue of gang violence in the region.
