Jamshedpur : The ambitious project of state road construction department (RCD) cable-stayed bridge at the Govindpur locality of the city has started progressing with commencement of work. The cable-stayed bridge is being set up keeping in view of rising rush of movement of heavy vehicles from the industrial hub Govindpur.

The bridge is being set up at a cost of Rs 138 crores by state road construction department (RCD). The bridge will be in association with SP Singla Construction Pvt Ltd.The spade-work for this ambitious project has begun in the form of sub-soil exploration work by another private agency.

This four-lane elevated corridor with cable-stayed bridge with approach road starting from Anna Chowk of Govindpurwill connect to NH-33 at Pipla.

Executive engineer, RCD’s Jamshedpur division, N Sahay said that they have signed an agreement with the Singla Construction on Monday.” It is an important project and we are working to make it success. Before reaching for an agreement with the bridge construction company, we had given out work for sub-soil exploration work to another private agency.  The sub-soil exploration work is necessary for installing piers of the proposed cable-stayed bridge. It is likely to be completed within the next fortnight.  As per our plans a week later the Singla Construction will start the bridge construction work,” said Sahay.

The executive engineer, when queried, said that the cable-stayed bridge will be made on EPC (engineering procurement contract) mode.

According to experts a cable-stayed bridge has one or more towers to support the bridge deck using the cables, basically cable-stayed bridges are longer than cantilever bridges and shorter than suspension bridge.

The construction agency has been asked to set up the bridge and make the design on its own and the RCD has to just given its nod having checked the design.  It was, therefore, necessary to get a sub-soil exploration work done before the contract firm, Singla Construction begins the work.

The private agency which is engaged to carry out sub-soil exploration at the proposed cable-stayed bridge site is boring and digging earth as deep as 30 metres and the digging so much is to test the strength of the soil.

“The cable-stayed bridge will be 220 metre long with approach on either side of it.  But the construction company may resort to certain changes in the final design of the bridge, which is to completed in 30- month time,” said an official posted at the RCD’s Jamshedpur division.
