Ranchi: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha today declared Savita Mahato, wife of late Sudhir Mahato, former deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand, as the party candidate for the Rajya Sabha election. It has also sought the support of all parties for the candidate.
JMM president Sibu Soren today made the announcement after a meeting of party MLAs and members of the core committee. A proposal was put forth wherein it was unanimously decided to propose the name of Savita Mahato as the party candidate for the RS polls.
It was made by party MLAs Vidyut Varan Mahato, Ramdas Soren, Hemlal Murmu and Mathura Prasad Mahato.
The party leaders said there was a tradition in the party to make the wife of any deceased party leader as a party candidate in election.
Sudhir Mahato passed away on 22nd January last following a cardiac arrest. Some of the party members had however requested Sibu Soren to himself become the party candidate in the RS election.
