Tensions flare in Lalbaba Foundry Jamshedpur as residents face off against Tata Steel demolition plans

Jamshedpur: Tensions reached a boiling point in Lalbaba Foundry, Kailash Nagar, under the Burmamines police station area on Friday morning as Tata Steel officials arrived with a heavy entourage and four bulldozers, prepared to carry out a demolition operation. The district administration, alongside Tata Steel, planned to clear encroachments on the disputed land. However, they were met with fierce resistance from local residents and business owners, leading to hours of chaos and confrontation.

The scene erupted around 9:30 am when Tata Steel’s bulldozers entered the area, igniting widespread protests. Members of the Lalbaba Foundry Vyapar Sangh immediately took to the streets, organizing a sit-in demonstration that quickly escalated. Protesters, driven by anger and fear of losing their homes and businesses, blocked roads, burned tires, and shouted slogans condemning Tata Steel’s actions. The sheer scale of the protest forced the district administration to deploy additional police forces, including a Vajra vehicle, as the situation threatened to spiral out of control.

Political parties rally behind residents

As word of the bulldozer’s arrival spread, the protest gained momentum with representatives from various political parties—including the BJP, Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party—joining the movement. The Burmamines main road became a battleground, with traffic paralyzed for several hours as the crowd swelled. Political leaders voiced their opposition to the demolition, accusing Tata Steel and the district administration of insensitivity towards the plight of the residents.

Notable figures like former MP Dr. Ajoy Kumar of Congress, Congress District President Anand Bihari Dubey, BJP leaders Abhay Singh, Dinesh Kumar, and BJP City President Sudhanshu Ojha all rushed to the scene, further intensifying the protest. Their presence signaled a united political front against the proposed demolition, with party lines blurring as leaders took a stand for the residents.

Amid the heated standoff, former MP Dr. Ajoy Kumar confronted the officials of the district administration. In a tense exchange, Dr. Kumar challenged the legitimacy of Tata Steel’s court order, arguing that discrepancies in the case, such as incorrect account numbers, made the action unjust. He questioned the officials on why no prior notice was given to the residents of Lalbaba Foundry before attempting to demolish their homes and businesses. The officials were left scrambling for answers as Dr. Kumar pressed them on the legality of their actions.

Temporary Reprieve for Residents

With the immediate threat of demolition averted, it was agreed that Tata Steel officials would set a new date for the removal of encroachments. Meanwhile, the residents of Lalbaba Foundry are preparing to seek legal relief.

They plan to file a case in court, aiming to secure a stay order that would prevent any further demolition efforts. A major point of contention is that the residents claim they were not made a party to the ongoing case in the Kolkata High Court, which had ruled in Tata Steel’s favor regarding the land.

A dispute years in the making

The conflict over the Lalbaba Foundry land dates back to 2006, when Tata Steel first filed a case in the Kolkata High Court, seeking the removal of what it deemed illegal encroachments on the disputed land. The court ruled in favor of Tata Steel, leading the company to file another case in the Jamshedpur Civil Court, seeking possession of the land.

In response, the Civil Judge Junior Division One Jitendra Ram ordered the district administration to enforce the court’s decision and hand over the land to Tata Steel. The entire operation was to be carried out under the supervision of court official Nazir Dheeraj Kumar.

The disputed area covers approximately 70 decimals and is home to over 150 warehouses and more than 1,000 houses. The residents of Lalbaba Foundry, many of whom have lived and operated businesses there for generations, now find themselves fighting to retain their homes in the face of legal and corporate pressure.

Awaiting the Court’s Verdict

As tensions remain high, all eyes are now on the Jamshedpur Civil Court, where the residents and business owners of Lalbaba Foundry have filed a complaint, challenging the legality of the eviction. Represented by advocate Sanjay Ranjan Bariyar, they are seeking a review of the court’s order and have requested a stay of the demolition.

A hearing was held on Friday, and the court’s decision is expected on Saturday. Many hope that the court will grant a reprieve, offering the residents of Lalbaba Foundry a temporary lifeline in their struggle against displacement. If the court rules in their favor, it could set the stage for a prolonged legal battle between the residents and Tata Steel.

MLA and MP missing from the spot, Dr. Ajoy takes a jibe

Jamshedpur: Amidst growing tension at Burmamines, former MP and senior Congress leader Dr. Ajoy  Kumar took a jibe and criticized local political representatives for their absence during a crucial moment when traders needed support. Speaking to the media, Dr. Ajoy  Kumar called out Jamshedpur MLA Saryu Roy  and MP Bidyut Baran Mahto, accusing them of being “missing from the spot” when traders faced the threat of having their warehouses demolished. He expressed disappointment that MLA Roy , despite being in the city, did not show up, while MP Mahto was preoccupied with political matters.

“These leaders make tall promises, but when the people need them, they are nowhere to be found,” said Dr. Ajoy  Kumar. “I did what I said I would. I stood up to the district administration and made them retreat.”

Dr Kumar assured the traders that he will continue to support them in their struggle. “Today, we forced the district administration to back down, but a permanent solution can only be found through legal means,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of a legal battle to protect the traders’ rights, pledging to provide them with legal assistance. However, he also stressed the need for the traders to take an active role in defending their position in court.

In a tense encounter at Lalbaba Foundry, where the district administration had arrived with police force to demolish a warehouse, Dr. Ajoy  Kumar confronted the officials on behalf of the traders. He questioned the legality of the operation, demanding answers from the officials. When asked why no notice had been issued to the warehouse owners and why no alternative arrangements had been made for displaced workers and residents, the officials reportedly had no satisfactory answers.

Dr. Ajoy ’s intervention led to the district administration backing off and halting the demolition temporarily.

Dr. Ajoy  Kumar also responded to protests by BJP workers, who opposed his presence at the traders’ protest site. According to him, the BJP’s agitation was a reaction to the exposure of 25 years of mismanagement under their rule. On Friday, BJP members attempted to disrupt Dr. Ajoy ’s speech as he addressed the traders at Lalbaba Foundry.

“My aim is not to play politics but to speak the truth,” said Dr. Ajoy . “The BJP’s mismanagement has led to this situation. Former BJP MLA Raghubar  Das failed to get this area released from lease agreements while getting 86 other settlements cleared, putting traders and residents here in jeopardy.”

BJP’s protest will continue in support of traders: Dinesh Kumar

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur, Sep 27: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come out in strong support of the traders protesting the district administration’s decision to demolish the Lal Baba Foundry in the Burma Mines police station area. The traders have been protesting for a long time, and BJP leader and former district president Dinesh Kumar has raised serious questions about the intentions of the state government and Dr. Ajoy Kumar.

Speaking on the matter, Dinesh Kumar said, “Dr. Ajoy Kumar claimed that the Chief Minister had been informed, and no action would be taken. But despite these assurances, the administration still moved forward to vacate the land. It was only the resistance of BJP supporters and traders that stopped the action.”

Kumar further targeted Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his wife, Kalpana Soren, for their lack of involvement. “Despite being in Jamshedpur, the Chief Minister’s wife did not think it appropriate to meet with the protesting traders. This clearly shows that the government is trying to intimidate both traders and the general public,” he stated.

He also took a dig at the local MLA, accusing him of inaction, and reiterated the BJP’s stance: “The BJP stands with the traders at every level.”

In a sharp critique of Dr. Ajoy Kumar, Dinesh Kumar added, “Dr. Ajoy, who showed up for a photo-op at the protest, was seen fainting due to the crowd and the tire smoke. His colleagues were repeatedly splashing water on his face. The public should question how such unfit people can be public representatives.”

Kumar expressed hope that further action against the traders would be halted until the court’s hearing. “We hope that any kind of action will be stopped until the court reaches a decision,” he concluded.

BJM opposes demolition in support of business committees

Jamshedpur, Sep 27: The Kailash Nagar Business Committee, along with the Bharatiya Janata Morcha (BJM) Burma Mines Division, strongly opposed the order to demolish warehouses and houses located at Lal Baba Foundry. Hundreds of BJM workers, under the leadership of BJM Burma Mines Division President Durga Rao and BJM Yuva Morcha District President Amit Sharma, joined the protest to support the business community and slum dwellers.

Durga Rao and Amit Sharma, addressing the crowd at the foundry, emphasized that their presence was on the instructions of MLA Saryu Roy. “As per the decision taken by the Kailash Nagar Vyavasayik Samiti, we strongly oppose this unilateral action by the administration and Tata Steel. Ignoring the interests of traders and slum dwellers, they are planning to demolish warehouses and houses. We are standing with the businessmen in this fight,” said Durga Rao.

The situation became tense when the administration deployed force to execute the demolition order, causing traders to grow aggressive. In the resulting chaos, Amit Sharma fell unconscious due to the pushing and shoving in the crowd. Fellow BJM workers quickly came to his aid, stabilizing him. Despite the disturbance, the BJM reaffirmed its support for the business community, pledging to stand by them throughout the campaign against the demolition.

Dr. Ajoy Kumar should stop misleading the public: Durga Rao

Jamshedpur, Sep 27: Bharatiya Janata Morcha (BJM) Burma Mines Mandal President Durga Rao has accused former MP Dr. Ajoy Kumar of misleading the public regarding the Lal Baba Foundry demolition case. In a press statement, Durga Rao challenged Dr. Ajoy Kumar’s claims that the demolition of warehouses and houses at Lal Baba Foundry had been halted after discussions with Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

“Dr. Ajoy Kumar stated that the Chief Minister assured him no demolition would take place, but if that’s true, why did the Jamshedpur District Administration, along with the police, arrive at the site to carry out the demolition on Friday?” questioned Durga Rao. He described the former MP’s statement as “the height of lies.”

Durga Rao went on to criticize Dr. Ajoy Kumar, suggesting that his recent activities were politically motivated. “Dr. Ajoy Kumar, who has been absent from Jamshedpur for the past five years, is now seizing every opportunity for political gain ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. However, he should stop fooling and confusing the public,” Durga Rao remarked.

He also praised the resistance from businessmen and BJP workers at the site, stating, “The administration was fully prepared to demolish the warehouses and houses at Lal Baba Foundry, but due to the strong protest from traders and BJP supporters, they had to step back.”

Durga Rao concluded by urging Dr. Ajoy Kumar to “stop misleading the public with false promises.”
