Tata Steel and Tata Cummins provide irrigation facility to Punsa farmers

Jamshedpur: In order to increase the coverage of cultivable area and make farming more sustainable, Tata Steel in collaboration with Tata Cummins installed yet another lift irrigation system at Punsa.

Nearly 35 acres of land will be enriched for second and third crop cultivations and 55 farmers will be benefitted by the installation. Biren Bhuta, Chief, Corporate Social Responsibility, Tata Steel, and Aswtha Ram, VP (Operations), Tata Cummins inaugurated the lift irrigation system and dedicated it to the residents of this village today in the presence of Debdoot Mohanty, Head , Rural Services, TSRDS team and villagers.

The maintenance of the Lift Irrigation system will be supervised by the Adibasi Jan Kalyan Samiti, a trust formed by the youth to take up development work at the village. The trust has formed a Pani Panchayat Samiti which will be responsible for the upkeep of the system.

Punsa is a village located in the Bodaam block of East Singhbhum district. Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), one of the delivery arms of Tata Steels Corporate Social Responsibility Department, has been working for the betterment of the inhabitants of Punsa since a long time. Over the years, the village has observed significant impact in terms of agricultural productivity, education to adults as well as matriculation students, and women empowerment through self-help groups and enterprise building activities.

The total geographical area of the village is 747.70 acres out of which 185.10 acres are worth cultivation. Unfortunately, only around 37 acres of land is being cultivated of the total land available for it.

In order, to shift the focus of farmers from rainfall dependency agriculture and introduce the concept of second and third crop farming to them, TSRDS constructed ponds and a lift irrigation system. This has helped farmers to take up vegetable cultivations.
