Tata Steel organizes 2nd Exposition

On Elimination of Man-Machine Interface 2014

: In an industrial environment Man-Machine interface is inevitable.

The challenge is to ensure that the ManMachine interface is not the cause or source of accidents.

While safety at the Man-Machine interface should ideally be ensured at the design stage, it’s also important to ensure that there is horizontal transfer of good practices across the organization and the learning from the past are used in the design for the future.

To achieve the above objective, the Divisional Implementation Committee (DIC) of Tata Steel Steel Manufacturing Division organized a two day exposition on ‘Elimination of Man-Machine
Interface 2014′ from 5 – 6 February, 2014.

This was jointly inaugurated by T V Narendran, Managing Director, Tata Steel and P N Singh,
President, Tata Workers’ Union.

All the divisions of Tata Steel India Operation displayed their kaizens in the exposition.

A Total of one hundred fifty kaizens were displayed, out of which sixteen were horizontally
deployed from the learning of FY13 exposition.

Safety Professionals identified hazard in the workplace through Fatality Risk Control Program (FRCP).

Seventeen kaizen displayed in the exposition were developed through FRCP.

T V Narendran and P N Singh both appreciated the above ‘Bottom Up’ initiatives and stressed to continue similar initiatives in Safety in the years to come.

MD advised to deploy all such Kaizen horizontally across the organization and also at KPO.

He further added that such improvements should be included at design state itself in all the new and upcoming projects.

A cross functional team was formed to evaluate the Kaizens displayed in the exposition. In the closing ceremony on February 6, the best kaizens were awarded by the Chief Guest, Mr B K Das, Dy. VP, CSI, Mr Debashis Das, COM-LP and Mr Vilas N Gaikwad, Chief, Safety &Ergonomics.

The Kaizens which were awarded in the closing ceremony included from LD1 department with title Provide roller bed to insert shaft in digging ladle of LD1( Kaizen number- 43), LD2&SC
with title Eliminate manual refractory brick salvaging at LD Services and in front of slag
dumping area of LD2&SC ( Kaizen number-1), LD3TSCR, HSM, CRM, CRM Bara, CRCW, Lime plant,
NBM, WRM, MM, SS Division, CSI Division, RM division, Other division, CSD and CRM departments were awarded.
