Jharkhand tourism set for major boost
Jamshedpur/Ranchi: Jharkhand’s tourism sector is preparing to add a new and ambitious chapter, with the state government planning to introduce modern floating solar houseboats on the waters of Chandil and Patratu dams, inspired by similar initiatives in Turkey. The project aims to offer tourists a unique stay-on-water experience while promoting eco-friendly tourism.
According to the Jharkhand Tourism Department, two solar-powered floating houseboats will be developed at each of the two locations — Chandil Dam and Patratu Dam. Of these, one houseboat will feature four bedrooms, while the other will have two bedrooms, providing tourists with comfortable overnight and morning stay facilities amid scenic surroundings.
Officials stated that the tendering process is nearly complete, and construction work has already commenced. The department has set a target to make the houseboats operational for tourists by the end of December.
Key features of the solar houseboats
The floating houseboats will be fully powered by solar energy, making them environmentally friendly. Solar panels installed on the roof will generate electricity during the day, ensuring an uninterrupted power supply even at night.
Designed to offer a hotel-like experience, the houseboats will be equipped with modern amenities, including air-conditioned bedrooms, a living area, kitchen facilities, television sets, and comfortable bedding.
To maintain the ecological balance of the dams, a zero-pollution model will be followed. Eco-friendly waste management and scientific disposal systems will be installed to ensure that water quality remains unaffected.
Special thermal and sound insulation technology will be used to block external noise and regulate temperature, ensuring privacy and a peaceful stay for tourists.
Easy online booking planned
To make the service more accessible, the tourism department plans to introduce an online booking system. This is expected to attract not only domestic tourists but also visitors from abroad, offering them a new reason to explore Jharkhand.
Officials said the project will also generate employment opportunities for local residents around Chandil and Patratu, giving a boost to the regional economy.
Tourism push by year-end
Confirming the timeline, Manoj Kumar, Secretary of the Tourism Department, Jharkhand Government, said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance tourism infrastructure in the state.
“With the objective of promoting tourism, solar-powered houseboat services equipped with modern facilities are being launched at Chandil and Patratu dams. Tourists will be able to enjoy this unique experience by the end of this year,” he said.
The introduction of floating solar houseboats is expected to position Jharkhand as an emerging eco-tourism destination, blending natural beauty with sustainable and innovative hospitality.
