Police arrest 30-year-old man for making extortion call to doctor in Jamshedpur

Arrested man was associated with gangster Akhilesh Singh

Jamshedpur, Feb. 26 : The city police on Tuesday arrested a 30-year-old man who had made an extortion call to a Mango-based doctor on February 11. The man who has been arrested is a resident of Samta Nagar Road No 15 in Mango. He was identified as Gauri Shankar Kunwar and allegedly associated with gangster Akhilesh Singh.

Kunwar had demanded Rs 20 lakh as `rangdari’ from the doctor, Ajay Kumar who is a resident of Teachers’ Colony on Dimna Road in Mango.

Senior superintendent of police, Anoop Birtharay said that Kunwar had through his cellphone No 9934627709 asked the doctor on February 11 to pay Rs 20 lakh otherwise he would face with dire consequences.

” As per our investigation, Kunwar had given a call once again same day, but the doctor did not receive it.  As a result of it, the accused through an SMS threatened him with dire consequences within 24 hours if he did not pick up the phone. When the criminal called once again, the doctor received the call and asked for some time for making payment of the extortion amount,” said the senior SP while addressing a press conference.

Birtharay said the doctor had later fixed February 25 evening for making the payment and asked Kunwar to come to Modi Park in Bistupur.  At the same time, the doctor lodged an FIR with the Mango police station giving details of all this.

” As we came to know about the incident, we came into action and  a team of police officials led by City SP, Prabhat Kumar raided at the Modi Park and eventually arrested Kunwar,” said the senior SP.
