Jamshedpur, Oct 21: The Department of Mathematics at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur inaugurated a five-day online International Workshop on Algebra and Fluid Dynamics (IWAFD-2025) on October 21. The workshop, which will continue till October 25, 2025, aimed to provide an inclusive learning platform for participants to explore the intersections of Algebra and Fluid Dynamics. The event has drawn an overwhelming response, with 541 participants from India and abroad.

The Chief Guest, Prof. Vijay P. Singh, Distinguished and Regents Professor at Texas A&M University, USA, emphasized that Mathematics was the mother of all sciences.” He elaborated on how mathematical principles underpinned surface-water hydrology, groundwater hydrology, hydraulics and irrigation engineering demonstrating the unifying role of mathematics in applied sciences.

Prof. Shiv Datt Kumar, Guest of Honour, spoke on the significance of algebra, particularly Lie algebra, in solving partial differential equations, encouraging participants to recognize its importance in scientific research and innovation. Another Guest of Honour, Prof. A. K. Mishra from IMSc Chennai, delivered an insightful address connecting machine learning and computational mathematics, illustrating how modern technology was deeply rooted in mathematical theory.

NIT Jamshedpur Director, Prof. Goutam Sutradhar, described mathematics as an “indispensable and sensitive discipline,” commending the workshop for bridging pure mathematics, engineering and applied sciences.

Convener Dr. Ratnesh Kumar Mishra highlighted that the workshop’s free and open-access format reflected NIT Jamshedpur’s commitment to inclusive education and research accessibility. He noted that Algebra and Fluid Dynamics together formed a crucial link between abstract reasoning and real-world phenomena.

The inaugural session was attended by the Deputy Director, Dean (Research & Consultancy), Head of the Mathematics Department and several faculty members. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Coordinator Dr. Snehasis Kundu, who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, speakers and participants for their enthusiastic involvement in the successful commencement of IWAFD-2025.
