Monsoon threatens pace of anti-Maoist operation in Jharkhand

Mail News Service

Ranchi: The ongoing massive anti-Maoist operation in Saranda forest is set to lose momentum as the monsoon season begins. The campaign, which involves over 15,000 personnel from various security forces, has been facing multiple weather-related challenges—particularly lightning strikes, venomous snakes landmines.

Recently, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer tragically lost his life after being struck by lightning in the dense forest. Several of his comrades were also injured in similar incidents, underlining the dangers soldiers face beyond combat.

Saranda forest, rich in iron ore deposits, is a natural conductor for lightning strikes, making it one of the riskiest terrains during the rainy season. “Lightning poses a real threat during monsoons with venomous snakes and Maoist-laid landmines, the risks multiply,” said a senior police officer involved in the operation.

Despite the hazards, the mission to apprehend top Maoist leaders such as Misir Besra, Patiram Manjhi Asim Mandal—each carrying bounties of ₹1 crore—continues. Authorities claim that operational protocols have been revised to ensure the safety of personnel during adverse weather.

“There are detailed guidelines in place for monsoon operations. Safety of our personnel remains a top priority,” the officer added.

Surprisingly, there is no separate compensation mechanism for police personnel affected by lightning, unlike civilians who receive ₹4 lakh in case of death and ₹2 lakh for injuries under the disaster relief fund. Police and CRPF personnel must rely on standard benefits like insurance and employment schemes related to Maoist violence.

With nature posing a challenge almost as significant as the Maoists themselves, the security forces are being urged to proceed with caution in the months ahead.
