Jamshedpur: Public anger over rampant encroachment in the Adityapur industrial area erupted into an unusual protest on the main road from RIT ground to NIT under RIT police station limits. Frustrated by roadside vendors occupying the road and alleged police inaction, local residents blocked traffic by staging a “momos party” in the middle of the street.
Former councillor Sudhir Chaudhary said repeated warnings to vendors went unheeded and police cited workload to avoid action. “When authorities didn’t listen, people chose a symbolic protest,” he said. Dozens of women and youths bought momos from the same stalls and ate them on the road, leading to a traffic jam for nearly 30 minutes.
When police arrived, heated arguments broke out with protesters. Following intervention by the Seraikela SDO, police were directed to act and encroaching shops were removed late in the evening.
Residents said encroachment has become a serious issue across Adityapur and Gamharia, narrowing roads and increasing accident risks. “Action should be regular, not only after public outrage,” locals demanded.
