Jamshedpur: In a major boost to healthcare in the Kolhan region, the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College and Hospital is set to start specialized Neuro and Heart surgeries. The hospital administration has initiated the process to empanel expert surgeons to ensure that critical patients no longer need to be referred to RIMS Ranchi or private facilities for life-saving operations.
The decision comes as MGM Hospital sees a steady influx of cardiac and neurological cases referred from various district hospitals across Kolhan.
New Contracts for Specialized Surgeons
While MGM currently has cardiac physicians, it lacks the surgical expertise required for invasive procedures. Similarly, while neuro-specialists are available, their current contracts are limited to OPD consultations.
Key changes in the pipeline:
- Empanelment of Surgeons: The hospital is preparing to sign fresh contracts with Neuro and Heart surgeons specifically for performing surgeries.
- Super-Specialty Mandate: Following directives from the State Health Headquarters, the hospital is fast-tracking the launch of comprehensive super-specialty services.
- Reducing Referrals: Once operational, these services will drastically reduce the need to refer critical patients to RIMS (Ranchi), saving crucial “golden hour” time for patients.
Infrastructure Upgrade: ICU and Cath Lab
To support these high-end surgeries, a high-level meeting was held between Hospital Superintendent Dr. Balram Jha, College Principal Dr. Diwakar Hansda, and Dr. Sanjay Kumar. The team discussed the urgent need for post-operative care infrastructure.
Planned Facilities:
- Dedicated ICUs: New Intensive Care Units (ICUs) will be established across various departments to monitor patients post-surgery.
- Cath Lab Establishment: The hospital is prioritizing the setup of a Cath Lab, which is essential for cardiac interventions like angioplasty.
- Central Pathology Lab: A centralized lab facility is being readied to provide rapid diagnostic support for emergency surgeries.
Impact on Patient Care
Currently, more than two dozen patients with heart and neurological issues visit MGM Hospital daily. Hospital authorities expect this number to rise significantly once the surgical wing becomes functional.
“Our current priority is to operationalize the ICUs for half a dozen departments, along with the Central Pathology Lab and the Cath Lab,” stated Dr. Diwakar Hansda, Principal of MGM Medical College.
By shifting from a referral-based model to a treatment-based model, MGM Hospital aims to become the primary healthcare hub for the underprivileged population of East Singhbhum and surrounding districts.
