Jamshedpur: In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) carried out a high-impact operation at Tatanagar Railway Station, leading to the arrest of four alleged smugglers and the seizure of 75 kilograms of Ganja ( Cannabis) . The late-night operation on April 8 is being described as the largest-ever ganja recovery in the station’s history.
The accused—identified as Ajay Kumar, Ravi Kumar alias Benga, Mohit Kumar Singh, and Raja Sonar alias Raj—are all residents of West Champaran district in Bihar. According to preliminary investigations, the group had sourced the contraband from different parts of Odisha and routed it through Jamshedpur, with plans to transport it further to Gorakhpur and Bettiah.
Acting on specific suspicion during routine surveillance, RPF personnel intercepted the suspects and recovered the massive consignment from their possession. Officials said the timely action not only foiled a major smuggling attempt but also exposed an inter-state drug trafficking network operating across eastern India.
Investigators uncovered a deceptive concealment technique used by the smugglers to evade detection. The ganja was tightly packed within large plastic sacks, with layers of soybean nuggets strategically placed around it—on the top, bottom, and sides—to mask the smell and avoid raising suspicion during transit.
The operation was led by RPF Post Commander Rakesh Mohan, whose team executed the raid with precision and coordination. Officials credited the success to sustained vigilance and intelligence-led policing at key railway transit points.
All four accused have been handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Tatanagar for further legal action. Authorities have launched a deeper probe to trace backward and forward linkages of the network, with efforts underway to identify suppliers, financiers, and intended receivers of the consignment.
