Jharkhand High Court Drops Contempt Case Against Advocate Mahesh Tiwari After Unconditional Apology

Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court has closed criminal contempt proceedings against advocate Mahesh Tiwari after accepting his unconditional apology, formally bringing the matter to an end.

The case originated in October 2025 when Tiwari allegedly asked a sitting judge to “remain within limits” during court proceedings. A video of the exchange went viral, sparking debate within legal circles and leading to the initiation of criminal contempt proceedings.

Acting on guidance from the Supreme Court of India, Tiwari tendered an unconditional apology before the High Court. A five-judge bench, noting his expression of remorse and the surrounding circumstances, accepted the apology and disposed of the case.

Legal observers see the decision as a reaffirmation of judicial dignity and restraint, highlighting that while the authority of the judiciary must be upheld, genuine contrition and corrective action are also recognised within the justice system.
