Jamshedpur, Jan 2: BJP MP Bidyut Baran Mahato has alleged that death of Jeet Mahato, a resident of Gokul Nagar in Mango, was not natural but the result of police torture, terming it a custodial killing.
After getting information about the incident, the MP visited Gokul Nagar on Friday evening and met the bereaved family.
The statement given by the deceased’s mother, Pooja Mahato, regarding the incident was “heart-wrenching,” the MP said.
He questioned the circumstances under which Jeet Mahato was arrested, stating that the manner of his detention raised serious suspicions.
He further alleged that after Mahato’s death, the police hurriedly conducted the post-mortem and cremation, which also falls under suspicion.
MP Mahato said he has been informed that the victim’s family was given Rs 2 lakh, raising several questions — from which fund was the money paid, who approved it, and on what basis.
“Is the life of a young Jharkhandi worth only Rs 2 lakh?” he asked.
According to the MP, Jeet Mahato was allegedly picked up by the police on suspicion of stealing a mobile phone, kept in custody, and subjected to torture.
After his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to a hospital, where he died later.
The MP also alleged that the police station in-charge under whose jurisdiction the incident occurred has a past record of misconduct, including assaulting and misbehaving with an Indian Army jawan.
Demanding strict action, MP Mahato urged the Jharkhand Director General of Police to register a murder case against the responsible police officers, immediately suspend all personnel involved, and order a high-level inquiry to expose the truth and ensure justice for the victim’s family.
He also demanded adequate compensation from the government, stating that Jeet Mahato was the sole breadwinner of the family, which includes a newborn child, and financial support is essential for their sustenance.
Calling the matter extremely serious, the MP warned that if prompt action is not taken by the administration, an agitation will be launched to ensure justice for the victim’s family.
Several local leaders and supporters, including Vinod Rai, Ravindra Singh Shishodia, Sushil Pandey, Animesh Sinha, Munna Mishra, Rakesh Prasad, Mahesh Singh, Suman Srivastava, and Navneet Tiwari, were present during the visit.
