Jamshedpur: Despite a month-long road safety campaign by the district administration, illegal parking on NH-33 remains a major safety hazard, leading to frequent accidents and loss of lives. The 3.3 km stretch from Pardih to Bhilai Pahadi has become a hotspot for unauthorized parking, with around 80 heavy vehicles parked illegally every day, 30 of them on the wrong side.
The most affected areas are Pardih Chowk to Dimna Chowk, where parked vehicles obstruct visibility and create a risk for commuters. In the past year alone, 11 people have died due to accidents caused by illegal parking.
Lack of enforcement worsening the situation
Earlier, joint drives by the Transport Department and Traffic Police had helped control the problem. However, these efforts have stopped and now, no action is being taken against violators. While the Mango Traffic Police is responsible for four areas—Mango, Ulidih, Azadnagar and MGM, all its officers are currently focused on helmet checking instead of regulating parking violations.
“NH-33 has become extremely dangerous due to heavy vehicles parked on the roadside. Urgent action is needed before more lives are lost,” said Shivani Shrivastav, a Mango resident.
Students at risk
Adding to the concern, the highway is the main route for students of six major schools, including Sheyn International School, SS Academy, RVS Academy and Netaji Subhas Public School. Parents and school authorities fear for the safety of students crossing the road.
“Heavy vehicles are parked dangerously along Baliguma, creating a constant risk for school children,” said Harvinder Singh, a resident.
Authorities remain indifferent
Traffic Inspector Bandhan Bhagat acknowledged the issue but admitted no action is being taken, saying, “All personnel are engaged in helmet checking. Action against illegal parking will be taken when the time comes.”
Residents, however, are demanding immediate intervention to prevent further tragedies.
