Jamshedpur: Home guards unpaid increased honorarium, agitation likely

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur, Dec 4: Home guards in Jamshedpur are facing delays in receiving their increased honorarium, with several government departments failing to comply with a state order. The Jharkhand government had mandated an increase in the daily honorarium for home guards from Rs 500 to Rs 1088, effective from August 10, 2024, following a directive from the High Court. However, many departments have yet to implement the hike, leaving the home guards frustrated and upset.

Over 400 home guards are currently working in various government offices across Jamshedpur, including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the Jharkhand Electricity Department, and Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL). Despite the clear mandate from the state government, institutions like BSNL in Golmuri, the Jharkhand DVC, and the Electricity Department’s units in Pratishtha Baharagora, Ghatshila, and Jadugoda have not increased the honorarium for their home guard personnel. As a result, many of the guards are refusing to report for duty due to dissatisfaction with the pay discrepancy.

The Home Raksha Vahini Lok Sevak Sangh, a state organization representing the home guards, has expressed its concern over the issue. The association has submitted a request to the Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of East Singhbhum, urging intervention to ensure that the directive is implemented.

“Despite the government order, many departments are not adhering to the increased honorarium,” said a representative of the Home Raksha Vahini Sangh. “This delay in payment is affecting the morale of the home guards, and we are prepared to take further steps if necessary.”

The failure to implement the order has led to a growing sense of agitation among the home guards, with the possibility of protests or strikes if their demands are not met. It is crucial that the authorities act promptly to resolve the issue and ensure the fair treatment of these essential workers.
