Jamshedpur: Dr KGS Chhokar, a well known Eye Specialist of Jamshedpur initiated the idea of opening an Eye Hospital in the city during the 1950s. In 1961 a Board of Trustees under Lady Roshan J Ghandy was constituted to start an eye hospital for the treatment and prevention of eye diseases and blindness.
TISCO (now TATA STEEL) had allotted a plot of land at Sakchi for the purpose.. The foundation stone was laid by Sir Jehangir Ghandy , Director � in � Charge, Tata Iron &Steel Company Ltd on March 29, 1958 and the Hospital commenced functioning in 1961.

In 1973 the hospital was registered under the Societies Registration Act .
The Jamshedpur Eye Hospital came up as boon for people suffering from various forms of eye impairment.

Free Cataract surgery is provided to BPL card holders and camp patients whose treatment includes 20% free surgeries by JEH.
Among other vital services offered by JEH are cataract that includes Micro Phaco and SICS processes, Fundus Photography, FI Angiography, Ultrasound B Scan, Argon Laser photocoagulation, Pediatric Cataract Management, Pediatric Vision assessment for infants and toddlers, ROP Screening Stimulation and Therapy, Muscle balance and Squint Assessment, Prism Therapy for Diplopia and Squint, Surgical Correction of Squint, Ptosis, Tube DCR, Trabeculectomy, Yag PI, Glaucoma Screening, Humphrey�s Visual Field Analysis, Corneal Topography (Pentacam), Corneal Transplantation, Contact Lens and Prosthetic, Yag Laser Capsulotomy and Tabeculotomy.
The rehabilitative processes include Low Visio Aid Clinic and Orthoptic Clinic. Preventive measures at JEH comprise CSR ensures regular outreach program, school children�s vision screening, camp workers training program and free cataract surgery for BPL card holders.
The extended facilities are JEH�s branded optical centre Titan Eye, pathological collection centre by NABL accredited lab, air conditioned Patients� Facility Area with coffee corner.
JEH has an MOU with Aravind Eye Hospital at Madurai for its capability building under LAICO. The aim of this program is to increase free cataract surgeries by improving its current efficiency and exploring newer possibilities. JEH is also recognized hospital for clinical teaching & training of �Optometry� course students by ARKA Jain University.
JEH is also a recognized center for short term �Preceptorship� training programme in Medical Retina. Hospital has Quality certification by ISO 9001:2015. Donations to JEH are exempt from Income Tax under Section 80 G of Income Tax Act 1961. Rs 10,000.00 for single & 1 lac for 12 cataract surgeries with IOL. Donations are accepted for infrastructure development, procurement of sophisticated equipment ,training & teaching of professionals to enhance and expand the patient care It is easy to take appointments at JEH.
On the spot appointments may be done through the official phone during working hours. Registration of patients can be done between 8.15 am and 12: 30 pm and again from 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm, except on Sundays.
