Jamshedpur: Tension gripped the Sidhu-Kanu settlement in Burmamines on Tuesday morning during a water disconnection drive. Personnel from Tata Steel UISL reportedly faced strong opposition from local residents.
Escalation and Allegations of Violence
Witnesses state that a company team arrived in a three-vehicle convoy around 10:00 AM to cut off water connections. The situation quickly turned volatile as residents protested the move. Residents alleged that the drive escalated into violence.
Community in Crisis
The Sidhu-Kanu settlement, which houses nearly 150 families, has struggled with acute water scarcity for a long time. Residents argue that the company should prioritize providing legitimate water connections before conducting disconnection drives.
Residents are now demanding:
- Strict Action against those involved in the alleged physical assault.
- Impartial Inquiry: An appeal to the district administration to investigate the conduct of the enforcement team.
- Justice: A fair resolution to the ongoing water crisis in the settlement.
Authorities of the district administration and Tata Steel UISL have yet to issue an official statement regarding the morning’s events.
