Interactive programme CMTA 2018 kicks off at NML

Jamshedpur: The four-day interactive programme on “Coal for Metallurgical and Thermal Applications: An Appraisal of its Characterization & Utility (CMTA 2018)”, organised by CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML) kicked off today at CSIR-NML. The seminar was formally inaugurated by the Chief Guest Prof. Rajender Gupta from University of Alberta, Canada. Dr. IndranilChattoraj, Director, CSIR-NML, Jamshedpur, Dr. D. Bandyopadhaya and Dr. Sanchita Chakravarty were present during the inaugural function.

More than 50 delegates from 12 Industry, Academia & Research Laboratory from different parts of the country are participating. The organisations are � NTPC; CCL, Ranchi; ECL, Asansol; ISM, Dhanbad; BCCL, Dhanbad; Inspectorate Griffith; D.B. Power Ltd, Raigarh; CMPDI, Ranchi; JNU, New Delhi; Tata Steel Jamshedpur; Usha Martin, Jamshedpur; NIT, Jamshedpur; CCO, Kolkata and ISP, Burnpur. Around 15 technical lectures are to be presented by eminent professor and scientist of global repute in seven sessions, namely – Thermal Coal Characterization, Coal Beneficiation, Behavior of thermal coal, Environmental issues, Metallurgical Coal and Coal Beneficiation.

The objective of this interactive program is to provide a common platform to various stakeholders in the coal sectors as well as metallurgical industries for an effective deliberation to identify problems and evolve implementable solutions to the challenges confronting efficient coal utilization with environmental friendly technologies needed for the growing demand of the economy.

While addressing the delegates, Dr. D. Bandyopadhaya, Chief Scientist and Head of MER Division emphasised on two major sectors, i.e. Power and Steel sector. The type of coal need to be understand for this particular sector.

Dr. Bandyopadhaya highlighted the planned events in CMTA-2018 during the next four days. He specifically mentioned that the technically enriched presentations, interactions with experts and the Laboratory visits would surely enhance the knowledge and encourage the participants for a better tomorrow.

A comprehensive understanding & assessment of coal is required specially for Indian Coal. He also given the Roadmap for looking coal as different perspective for a long terms benefit for our country.

Dr. IndranilChattoraj, Director, CSIR-NML, Jamshedpur welcome the delegates who attended the inaugural programme of CMTA-2018. He highlighted that India is the third largest producer of Coal. Dr. Chattoraj gave a glimpse of the R&D project related to Coal carried out by the CSIR-NML over last 67 years. He opined that such seminars give ample opportunities for the professional working in coal research to share their thoughts and idea on a common platform.

Prof. Rajender Gupta from University of Alberta, Canada, and the Chief Guest of the inaugural function addressed the delegates. He appreciated CSIR-NML India for organising this event and to bring academia, industry and R&D together.
He also emphasised on adoption of less polluting and energy efficient technologies by thermal and metallurgical industries.
