India Welcomes US-Iran Ceasefire; Hopes for Lasting Peace

New Delhi: India welcomed the ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran on Wednesday, expressing hope that the move will foster enduring stability in West Asia. In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable paths to ending the ongoing conflict.

The MEA noted that the regional hostilities have caused immense human suffering and severely disrupted global energy supplies and trade networks.

The MEA expressed hope for lasting peace in West Asia and the restoration of global trade through the Strait of Hormuz

“We welcome the ceasefire and hope it leads to lasting peace. As we have continuously advocated, de-escalation and diplomacy are essential to ending this conflict,” the MEA stated. The ministry further emphasized the need for “unimpeded freedom of navigation” and the smooth flow of commerce through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The Ceasefire Breakthrough

The diplomatic shift follows an announcement by US President Donald Trump regarding a conditional two-week pause in planned military strikes. The decision came just 90 minutes before a self-imposed deadline, following intensive backchannel diplomacy.

Key highlights of the agreement include:

  • Trump’s Stance: In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated he would suspend attacks if Iran ensures the “complete, immediate, and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz. He noted that the US and Iran have reached a “workable basis” for a 10-point proposal to finalize a long-term peace deal.

  • Iran’s Response: Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi signaled tentative acceptance, stating that Iran’s armed forces will cease defensive operations if US attacks halt.

  • Global Impact: The two-week window allows for coordinated safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, providing significant relief to global markets and the energy sector.

As both nations work toward a definitive agreement, India and the international community await the finalization of the deal, which could redefine security in the Middle East.
