IMD issues heavy rain alert, schools remain shut in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of Jharkhand over the next three days, triggering caution among authorities and residents alike.

According to the IMD, the ongoing weather activity is being driven by a well-marked low-pressure area that currently lies over southeast Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh, coupled with a highly active monsoon trough. This system is expected to intensify rainfall across northern, north-central, and adjoining central districts.

On July 16, the northwestern and north-central parts of the state are likely to experience heavy to very heavy showers, while thunderstorms and lightning will pose additional risks in isolated areas. Meteorologists have warned that the northern and adjoining central districts could face particularly intense downpours, potentially causing localized flooding and disruption to normal life.

The IMD bulletin further indicated that on July 17, thunderstorms and lightning are expected to continue in several districts, though the overall intensity of rainfall may gradually reduce compared to previous days.

Experts attributed this enhanced monsoon activity to the monsoon trough extending from Bikaner in Rajasthan, passing through northeast Rajasthan, northwest Madhya Pradesh, Siddhi, Ranchi, and reaching the low-pressure centre over southeast Gangetic West Bengal and Bangladesh. This configuration has created a strong convergence zone, significantly increasing the likelihood of widespread rainfall.

Local administrative authorities have urged residents, especially those living in flood-prone and low-lying areas, to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during thunderstorms, and prepare for possible waterlogging, traffic snarls, and infrastructure damage.

In view of the IMD’s warning, schools across Jamshedpur remained closed today as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Authorities have set up helpline numbers and rapid response teams to tackle any emergencies arising from the predicted heavy rainfall. Citizens are encouraged to monitor official updates and follow advisories issued by the district administration.

With the monsoon expected to remain active in the coming days, residents have been reminded to stay prepared and exercise caution until conditions improve.
