Historic first for NIT Jamshedpur as President to grace 15th Convocation

President to personally confer four major honours

Jamshedpur: In a historic moment for the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur, the President of India Droupadi Murmu will, for the first time since the institute’s establishment, address a convocation ceremony and personally confer degrees upon graduating students. The landmark occasion will take place during the 15th Convocation Ceremony of NIT Jamshedpur on December 29, 2025, at the institute campus at 2 pm.

The convocation will be graced by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, as the chief guest. Her presence marks an unprecedented milestone in the academic journey of the institute, which functions as an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Several eminent dignitaries are expected to attend the ceremony, including the Governor of Jharkhand Santosh Gangwar, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand Hemant Soren, Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, senior academicians, and other distinguished guests.

A total of 1,114 degrees, including two honorary degrees, will be awarded during the convocation. Out of these, 612 students will receive their degrees in person. This includes 417 undergraduate students, 149 postgraduate students, and 46 doctoral scholars.

The overall graduating batch comprises students from multiple programmes. The B.Tech programme includes 583 male and 149 female students. In M.Tech, 84 male and 22 female students are graduating, while the M.Sc programme has 64 male and 25 female graduates. The MCA programme includes 98 male and 10 female students, and the Ph.D programme has 58 male and 19 female scholars.

The convocation will witness the presence of eight distinguished guests, 27 special guests, and 33 members from the Board of Governors, Senate, and Heads of Departments. Faculty members, non-teaching staff, officials from the local administration, Rashtrapati Bhavan officials, and representatives from print and electronic media will also attend.

During the ceremony, the President of India will confer four major honours, including two Gold Medals and two honorary degrees. The Gold Medals for academic excellence will be awarded to Krishnashis Mandal of M.Sc Physics, who secured a CGPA of 9.64, and Priyanshu Raj of B.Tech Electrical Engineering, who achieved a CGPA of 9.52.

The Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) will be conferred upon Swami Govind Dev Giri Ji Maharaj in recognition of his distinguished contributions to society, culture, and spiritual heritage. The Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa) will be awarded to Rabindra Kumar Behera, Founder and Chairman of RSB Group, for his outstanding contributions to industry, entrepreneurship, and nation-building.

Addressing the media ahead of the convocation, Goutam Sutradhar, Director of NIT Jamshedpur, said that the institute remains committed to academic excellence, research, innovation, and industry collaboration while aligning its academic framework with the National Education Policy 2020. He added that the institute continues to play an active role in national development.

MK. Sinha, Dean Academic, stated that Gold and Silver Medals are awarded strictly on the basis of academic merit and CGPA, following approvals from statutory academic bodies. He also highlighted recent curriculum reforms, outcome-based education, and the strengthening of interdisciplinary academic programmes.
