Ranchi: Assam Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Jharkhand co-in-charge, Himanta Biswa Sarma, claimed on Wednesday during a press conference that the Jharkhand Police’s intelligence wing was tracking the movements of former Chief Minister Champai Soren.
Sarma stated that two sub-inspectors from Jharkhand Police’s special branch were apprehended by Champai’s supporters while they were taking photographs of him at the hotel where he was staying in Delhi.
“Both special branch officers were handed over to the Delhi Police by Champai’s supporters. During questioning, the officers revealed that they had been monitoring Champai’s movements for the last few months,” said Himanta.
The two officers also informed the Delhi Police that they had followed Champai wherever he went. According to the Assam CM, the officers had even tracked the former Chief Minister during both of his recent visits to Delhi.
Sarma further claimed that the duo had been assigned the task of keeping a watch on the former Chief Minister by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Special Branch, Prabhat Kumar.
The Assam CM also informed journalists that Champai is still a cabinet minister in the Jharkhand government. He added that the Jharkhand government has set a very troubling precedent.
“Champai has shown interest in joining the BJP, and he has not yet resigned from his positions. Using government resources to track the movements of ministers is a very disturbing trend,” added the Assam CM.
Biswa also mentioned that during his visit to Delhi, Champai was staying at the Taj Hotel along with his personal secretary.
“Champai has lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police, stating that the two officers were following him. He noted that they were on the same plane he had boarded from Kolkata to Delhi and had booked rooms next to his in Delhi,” said the BJP’s Jharkhand election co-in-charge.
Biswa added that while he has the names and photos of the officers who were following Champai, he would not disclose their identities, as they might be involved in various other operations, including anti-Naxal insurgency activities.
