Jamshedpur: Government bulldozers are set to roll in Jamshedpur as the Railway Engineering Department prepares to demolish 27 shops along the Tatanagar Station Chowk–Kitadih Road. Acting on the orders of the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), the department on Thursday issued a final eviction notice to lease-holding shopkeepers, directing them to vacate railway land by January 3.
According to officials, bulldozer action is likely on January 5, as part of the Tatanagar Railway Station Redevelopment Project. Notices were served with the help of RPF personnel from Station Chowk to Bagbeda Thana Mor.
Despite shopkeepers meeting the Jamshedpur Member of Parliament, no relief was granted, and the Railways proceeded with the final notice. Many of the affected traders have been running their businesses on railway land for 50–60 years, causing widespread distress.
So far, four shopkeepers have vacated their premises following the third notice, while others have begun identifying alternative locations to relocate their businesses.
Railway sources said that in the first phase, notices have been issued to shopkeepers from Station Chowk to the Running Room on Kitadih Road, affecting 32 shops in total. In the second phase, an anti-encroachment drive will be launched from Kitadih Trimurti Chowk to Purva Nala, where more than 100 people have already been instructed to vacate railway land.
Gudri Market Also Under Railway Scanner
As part of the station redevelopment plan, Gudri Market on Jugsalai Road has also come under the railway’s radar. However, no notices have been issued yet. Officials indicate that during the construction of a new road from the petrol pump near Station Road to Khas Mahal, some front-facing shops in Gudri Market may be demolished.
This is aimed at widening the road, improving traffic safety, and facilitating vehicles coming from Burma Mines Overbridge to Jugsalai Station Road, along with the possible construction of a roundabout.
