New Delhi: Elon Musk has intensified his legal battle against OpenAI by seeking the removal of CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman. The move follows reports of Musk’s ongoing challenge to the AI firm’s transition toward a for-profit structure.
In a Tuesday court filing, Musk stated that his lawsuit aims to reverse OpenAI’s restructuring and restore its status as a non-profit research organization. He requested that the court direct any awarded damages to OpenAI’s charitable arm, arguing that the legal action prevents a public charity from serving private, for-profit interests.
Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft alleges that the company abandoned its founding mission after accepting billions in funding. While Musk previously indicated he might seek up to $134 billion in damages, OpenAI has dismissed the allegations. The company characterized the lawsuit as a “harassment campaign” fueled by “ego and jealousy” to stall a competitor.
The tension continues to escalate:
-
Anti-Competitive Allegations: OpenAI’s Chief Strategy Officer, Jason Kwon, recently urged authorities in California and Delaware to investigate Musk for alleged anti-competitive behavior.
-
Competing Interests: Although Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, he left in 2018 and launched his rival venture, xAI, in 2023.
-
Failed Takeover: Earlier this year, OpenAI rejected Musk’s unsolicited $97.4 billion bid to acquire the non-profit’s assets.
As OpenAI proceeds with plans to raise capital and potentially go public, global competition tightens. Recent reports indicate that Chinese AI models now account for nearly 30% of global workloads, up from just 1% in late 2024, sparking fresh national security concerns among US policymakers.
