Jamshedpur, Feb 1: A wild elephant killed a 44 year old man, identified as Piklu Sabar, in Gohaldih village of Sardiha panchayat in Chakulia in the small hours of Saturday.
Sources said the man was trying to drive away a herd of wild elephants who strayed into the village. Helping the forest officials, Piklu reportedly came too close to an elephant who caught him by its trunk and threw him down on the hard ground before crushing him.
Forest officials gave an ex gratia sum of Rs 25,000 to the next of kin of the deceased. An additional sum of Rs 3.75 lakh would also be given to the aggrieved family, forest officials said.
Baharagora MLA Samir Mohanty spoke to East Singhbhum DC Ravi Shankar Shukla and demanded compensation for the next of kin of the deceased.
