Dengue cases refuse to decline, administration on back foot

Jamshedpur, Aug. 5 : After 40-year-old Babulal Tandi, a driver by profession, became the second victim of dengue in city this year, the administration is feeling hapless. Cases of dengue are on the rise in the city and its adjoining areas. According to information several dengue positive cases have been confirmed through the blood sample test done by the MGM Medical College’s microbiology department. Presently, six dengue-positive patients are admitted in various hospitals, including at the MGM Medical College and Hospital.
District civil surgeon, S.K. Jha however claimed that they want to implement dengue action plan effectively as they suspect there must be several pockets which are prone to mosquito breeding.

Jha said that the district health department officials are already carrying out the dengue action plan by creating awareness about the disease among the people and also by carrying out anti-larval operation in those areas from which maximum number of positive cases of dengue had turned up in the city hospitals.

“We need to understand that mosquitoes that carry the virus of dengue do not come from outside, rather they generate from the household things like flower-pots, coolers water, rejected tyre kept on the roof top or in the corner of the garden. So we must ensure that there is no such place where water is stagnant for some time,” said the official.

The health centers across the district have been asked to provide line list of patients with symptoms for such diseases on a 24 hourly basis. The lists of patients contain name, age and sex, along with full address of the patient undergoing treatment at a health center. This would help us in locating not only the patient but also taking preventive measures in the residential area of the affected persons to prevent vector breeding centers, said the official.

Preventive measures includes coordinating with the district health department (read district malaria officer) in carrying out spraying of bleaching powders, DDT and anti larvicidal in affected areas identified on the basis of location of patients undergoing treatment at health centers.

A resident of Jugsalai said that there is no fogging in the area and mosquito menace is always there round the year due to khatals which is virtually in the back of our house. Residents also dump their garbage and waste near the big drain.

Another local said that local residents have complained to local authorities against the khatals (cattle sheds) but no action has been taken.

Neither Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (the local urban body) nor Jusco (Baridih which shares it border with Birsanagar is manned by Jusco) have taken any action against the khatal. It was only today morning that the local urban body started sprinkling bleaching powder in the locality, he said.
