Cyclonic trough to trigger thunderstorms and gusty winds in Jharkhand

Jamshedpur: The Ranchi Meteorological Centre has sounded a weather alert for Jharkhand as a cyclonic trough sweeping through eastern and central India continues to destabilize atmospheric conditions over the region. The trough, which extends from a cyclonic circulation over East Bihar and adjoining Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, cuts across Jharkhand, Vidarbha, and Telangana, reaching as far as North Rayalaseema at an elevation of approximately 0.9 km above mean sea level. This elongated zone of instability is expected to fuel a wave of thunderstorm activity, gusty winds, and lightning strikes across the state over the next four days.

On May 15, several isolated pockets in eastern Jharkhand, including areas around Jamshedpur, are likely to experience a hot and humid day, interrupted by scattered thunderstorms and lightning. Gusty winds ranging between 30 to 40 kmph may sweep through these areas, posing risks to infrastructure and commuters. The weather is set to intensify on May 16, with the meteorological office forecasting stronger thunderstorms and lightning incidents across the eastern belt, accompanied by gusty winds peaking between 40 to 50 kmph. These events are expected to spread further inland as atmospheric convection deepens.

The volatile weather conditions will carry into May 17, when thunderstorm activity is predicted to expand across most of Jharkhand, excluding northwestern districts. Wind speeds will remain elevated, with isolated areas facing lightning and brief but intense downpours. The forecast for May 18 mirrors the previous days, with widespread thunderstorm activity and strong winds continuing to affect various parts of the state.

The Ranchi Meteorological Centre has issued a precautionary advisory urging residents to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open fields, and secure any loose items such as garden furniture or construction materials that could be lifted by strong winds. Commuters are advised to exercise extreme caution, especially during evening hours when storm activity is likely to peak. Authorities have also stressed the importance of staying updated through official weather channels and public bulletins.

With the trough continuing to channel moist air and promote convective instability across Jharkhand, the risk of sudden, localized weather disruptions remains high. Residents and local administrations are advised to stay vigilant as the state braces for several days of turbulent weather.
